Crunch Time

Ok, now that RSVP’s are closed i can work on other things.  Afterthis weekend, the calendar will be closing and other than work, the only other thing i’m going to be working on is getting this performance ready.  I still have a few things in my todo list, but come next week, i’ll be working hard to get them all punched out.  I’m really looking forward to seeing everyones reaction watching this.  I need to remember that they are the reason we are doing all this.  Kind of a backwards way of thinking for a wedding, but after you see it, you’ll understand.

Tommrow is the last day

…to RSVP.  If you haven’t done so already, please do so today.  You can use the card included in your invitation or send your rsvp to the email address on the card.  We are only making provisions for those who are rsvp’ing.  There is no way to gurantee a seat and a meal without knowing that your going to be there.

EAS Reciever

I often wonder about who is at the other end of our EAS recievers at the radio station.   Down here in south texas the i typically see Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and Hurricane Warnings, but i never give much thought to the guys putting this stuff out on our ticker-tape.  This guy is one of those persons.  Check out his encounter with something called a Tornado.  Don’t really see them across these parts, but looks like they are a real bugger.

Eagle Pass had one of those tornado things not to long ago.  Some radio stations were being critized for not issuings alerts.  Actually one mexican station and the other time warner (no big suprise).   People were complaing that they had no warning.  I went ahead and reviewed the configuration of all our our EAS recievers for all of our stations and they are all setup to automatcily relay Tornado Watches and Warnings for there local broadcast area.  Ok.. i sleep a little better a night.   (actually the night i did that, there was a tornado watch issued for our area.  I was got the alert first on my mobile pda, so then went to tv and turned on the radio to make sure we were going to carry it.. sure enough, our station relayed the alert but on my digital cable box, the words EAS were displayed on the front pannel, the channel switched to channel 2, then the tv went back to my orignal channel.  no alert or crawl or anything.. oh well.. what can you expect from TWC.

sleepless weekend

Well, Friday the ktex morning show was broadcasting from south padre island, and rather than waking up at like 3am to get there and setup by 5:30, i stayed with Carey and Lisa at the island.  It worked out great, his birthday was that same night so i got to celebrate with them.   Saturday evening we were going to take KQXX off  the air to swap out the transmitters.  The V5 for  V10.  The cabinets are identical so really it was just an easy swap.  We started at 7pm and by 10pm we were done with the hardware swap.  The new transmitter was in place and powering up.  Now came my part.  To save money, they decided to keep the old exciter and just move it to the new transmitter.  The exciter is the main part of the transmitter where the audio is converted to RF.  The rest of the system is just a bunch of amplifiers taking that rf from 10watts to 6000 watts.  The sales person said it would work so we assumed it would work.  Well turns out the software in the transmitter and the exciter were not exactally compatible.  So we had to up the output on the exciter, lower the sensitivity on the transmitter, and swap to FM only and we were able to get on the air.  1am i was finally home.  now they are going to send us the upgraded software to bring the exciter up to speed with the transmitter.  So tonight at midnight i’m going back out there to pull some files off the EEPROM to send to the manufacture so they can preconfigure everything we need to upgrade.

22 days

that’s what the countdown says.  of course i’m excited about the day being just around the corner.  I cant wait for the time when i get to fall asleep and wake up next to patti, i can’t wait for the time i get to spend the rest of my life with her.  i think i’m just nervous about the actual day.  there is alot left to do and it’s not done yet.  i just need to take these last 22 days and work on putting everything else aside to make sure that i get the things i need to get done, done.

More Backups

Well, despite all that hardware i forgot about the enviroment.  last night had some nasty storms run through here so this site was off for a few moments.  I’ve since then corrected that by utilizing the multiple powersupplies, one going ot a UPS, one to a surge supressor and the other to the building generator.  When the city power goes out, the UPS will kick in, holding power until the building generator transfers over, and vice versa for resumption.

Almost done

Ok.. the new server is almost done.  This hopefully should be alot more stable than the previous one.  The system is mirrored on two drives using RAID 0, the data is stripped across RAID 5 on 5 other drives.  The what about power failiures like the other system, this system has 3 redudant active power supplies.  Hot swap PCI cards, hot swap memory, two system processors, a DLT tape backup

At 1:00 each day the system will backup the entire mysql system to text files, than at 2 the system will back up all the data to tape.  then at 3 the system will replicate the data to an offsite facility.  hopefully all these measures should help keep this more stable and functional.
