i should be getting referral fees.

a few weeks ago, after admiring the kids nano’s and video ipods, and other do-hickeys, i started to consider getting my own.  But i didn’t want one just just play music.  I wanted one that would be functional.  so i started with my research.  i don’t know how people can impulse shop.  Just go out to a store, see something you like and get it.  I can’t.  I need to know what i’m looking for.  I need to know what the consumer reports are, the cost of ownership (ink cost, batteries, maintenance, hazardous waste disposal fees, etc)

Some may say, "what about when you got your car?  you went for an oil change and you came home with a car"  well.. i had already been shopping for an SUV.  I just happen to find the right one while i was there.  and i didn’t come home with it… i came back the next day to get it.

but anyway.  After looking at all of the mp3 players on the market, i finally gave in to my standing rule, no apple, no google.  and i came home with an itouch.  not only is this thing an mp3 player, but it has a built in wifi adapter letting you use apple’s safrai to browse, built in youtube browser, pop, imap, and webmail accessibility.  video playback, photo storage, and other cool things i haven’t played with yet.

A few of the downsides are the need for itunes to sync, and the fact that i got the 8gig version.  I can use up gigs really quickly.  i just need to get out of the habbit of syncing my entire library.  i should probably clean up my library to.  i have a very eclectic musical taste.  shuffle would reveal pedro the lion, kendall payne, bob marley, cyndi lauper, chopin, petra, metalica (pre 2000), gershwin, la mafia, ladysmith black mambazo.

anyway- back to the point.  i’ve already recommended this little device to several people.  Even my boss this morning got a recommendation from me on this toy.

and back to my two moral standards, no apple no google.  well..  iGoogle is now my homepage, my rss reader of choice, my calendar sync method, my ical generator, and even my preferred search engine.  i’ve sold out.  sorry.  i have to support my family somehow.  even if it means putting my morality on the line.

defeated weekend

i entered in this pc building race thing at compusa.  i felt pretty confident that i could do ok.  patti hannah and i got there early and watched the heat before us.

anyway, my turn finally came up.  there wasn’t much to do, install the memory, hard drive, cd rom, face and cover, power up and click a button.  that’s it.

well i was doing ok until i got to the side panel.  the latch was bent and woudln’t slide in.  oh well.  at least i got the next day off not having to go back.

all i wanted was a driver

for a cisco wifi card.

that’s it.

no goverment secrets, no api’s, no source code.. just the stinking driver.

i wasn’t able to use my normal username

or my normal passwords.  after about 20 minutes of trying to make it work i finally got to sign in.. and i forgot the username it made me use.  argh.

i’m alive

exhausted but alive.

10 years from now, when i look back at this thing, what do i want myself to know about what’s going on in my life now?

well, it’s costing over $40 to fill up my car with gas.  near 4 dollars a gallon of gas is compared to the near 4 dollar a gallon of milk.  a quarter of all corn goes to make ethanol now.  so is ethanol cheeper than gas?  nope.  and is that why food cost so much, because there is less corn?  and it cost more to ship it?  no and no.  the economy is on the rocks, the value of the dollar keeps slipping.   Inflation i guess you could call it.  1 dollar only gets you .65 euros right now.  a year ago it was .74.  five years ago was .95

as we as a nation get futher in dept, our dollar is worth less.  so it’s all a part of the circle of debt i guess.  how are we going to get out of this?  give up the dollar and start bartering?  go back to a gold backed dollar?  convert to euros?  become canuks?  and how is it affecting me?  well.. i’m not driving any less.  I still commute to work every day.  at what point to i begin looking for somewhere closer to work?  My 401k has lost value, ytd i have a rate of return of -5.3%

So enough of the gloom, i don’t want that to be all that i remember about this day 10 years from now.

I’ve been working on a few projects here at work.  One has been fun so far.  Ever notice when the guys on the radio are doing a remote and they sound like they are calling from a cell phone?  well.. it’s usually because they are.  Well those days are soon to be over.  Cell phones have very limited vocal bandwidth.  about 10kHz.  So using a special encoder, we are able to take normal audio and convert it to a "streaming" type of audio that can be transported via ip.  ok that is great and all assuming you have IP at both locations.  Well.. with the EVDO wireless network we can.

The hardest part of all of this is going to be trying to show a jock how to estlablish an IP connection via EVDO, and then dialing an IP address to get back to the studio via that mobile internet line.
