One fine morning

It’s funny how quickly things can change.  My routine was simple.  Hear the alarm at 7, snooze until 7is, get dressed, kiss the wife goodbye, and off to work I go to make the 30 minute drive to Weslaco.  I’ve been doing that for about 7 years now.  I thought yesterday wouldn’t be any different.

Up 16th st, cut across on primrose to main to get the traffic light, turn left onto Nolana while waving to the crossing guard who is always way to cheerful at 7 in the morning, thru the school zone taking Nolana to US 281, and interchange to US 83 to Weslaco.  Traffic is usually heavy and Nolana at this time as well as on 281.  I never expected this lady to interrupt my morning commute.

I had turned onto Nolana heading east towards the expressway, Nolana is now 6 lanes with three lanes in either direction as well as the turning lane.  I was in the middle lane with a car slightly ahead of me in the left-most lane and possibly a car to the right of me in the right lane next to the turning lane.  I was driving through the school zone and approaching 12th street where the school zone ends so starting to pick up some speed.  Cars (and people) usually cross at 12th street but there isn’t a traffic light there, only a stop sign for the cross-traffic.  The car to the left of me must have been turning on to 12th street and there was a car on 12th turning into Nolana turning west.  That car so the car to the left of me turn but didn’t see me still going straight.  She turned into me.  Everything happened really quickly.  I remember a sudden stop, I didn’t even have time to hit the breaks.  Then there was a sizzling sound and a burning smell.  At first I thought it was the engine and radiator fluid.  So I unbuckle, try and get out, it locked.  unlock, get out and walk over to the other car.  Lady in the front seat, look in the back seat, empty.  I walk back over to her and she’s crawling over to the passenger side since she can’t get out of her side and ask for a phone.  I had set it in my console so I walk back over to my car to get it.  the radio is still on and I notice that all of the airbags had deployed.  Got my phone and started to call 911.  Then I saw a police car approach.  (that was fast)  People have stopped and were asking about me.  I was fine.  I thought, I should call patti, I looked down and my phone was already calling her.  ok?  Amber had driven right through the accident and saw me and called her first.  So I explained that I was ok but might need another way to get to work.  She was heading over.  I took a moment and took my first snap-shoot of the event and posted it to facebook.  I sent the same photo to my office with a note “I might be a little late” IMG_0519ed

So checked in with the police, handed my license and insurance paperwork over for the first if many times that day.  I wanted to let the police get the statements from the witnesses first before me.  So Patti showed up and I had her call the insurance.  About that time I notice my writs and see that my left is pretty red and a few scratches and cuts, my left is hurting but nothing obvious.  The cops finally come by and ask me about what happened.  The lady who was in the other car was still in her full body pajamas and fuzzy slippers.  (no wonder she never got out of the car) At one point she left and the owner of the car, her husband?, who had shown up said she left to get her license.  Anyway.. a while later I see the cops talking her her giving her a ticket.

So they tow off the car, Patti drives us to the tow yard where we empty out the car into hers. She then takes me to the doctor where they prescribe some meds but didn’t find anything serious.   So we get home and finally start catching up on all of the text and email.  Actually, everyone was calling and texting patti.  I think my sister was the only one who called me.  So check up on the insurance.  The car was paid off but we kept comp and collision on it.  We also had a rental reimbursement on it so I wanted to check on how to start using that.  I called Progressive, keyed in my account number and was connected directly to my local rep who was just about to call me.  She took my statement.  She also asked me which repair shop I wanted to use.  She setup for that shop to pick up the car and she also setup the car rental for me.  All I had to do was go pick it up.  Progressive really made the whole experience easy.  I would recommend them.

So Hannah had her Christmas band concert last night, I went with a wrist brace and bandages.  It was a good concert though.  The kids did well.  Back to work today just taking iteasy.  Glad it didn’t turn out worse.  I'd like to thank everyone to called and texted to check on me, even it was was through patti 🙂  Never knew how many knew me who pass through that road.

i thought they were for my roof

most bloggers i follow on my rss feed don’t talk about their own health but for me it’s the most exciting thing going on.  remember my wisdom teeth that they barbarically stole from me.  yeah, i got a few weeks worth of stuff to talk about then.  about two weeks ago i noticed this weird rash along my side.  It was red and roundish and about the size of a quarter.  My first thought was that it looked like ring-worm- but i hadn’t been mud wrestling lately.  A few days later i noticed other spots along the same side of my body.  What was strangest is that they were actually painful.  Not like itchy but sore.  For a while i though i had cracked a rib somehow but again, no contact sports lately.  Finally by that Friday i was quite uncomfortable and the spots were spreading.  I gave in and went to see the doctor.  First of all, they schedule me for 9:20.  10 oclock they call my name to weight me and take my temp.  then they send me back to the waiting room.  10 minutes later they put me in a room.  The doctor lady person wasn’t long after that.  i showed her the spots and she took a step back.  “Do they hurt?” yeah.. “is it a stabbing pain? Tingling kind of prickly?” um.. now that i think of it.. yeah it is a stabbing pain.. and it does tingle like a foot fallen asleep.  “Have you ever had chicken pox?” um.. when i was like 6 or 7.

So come to find out.. I have Shingles.  Interesting thing about shingles, it’s the Chicken Pox redux.  When you get the ckicken pox… and it clears up, the virus that causes it, varicella, goes dormant.  Usually when your really old and have a weekend immune system, the virus wakes up again but comes back as shingles.  So i got these huge 1000mg pills and Patti got me some lotion that really helps.  a week later it’s cleared up quite a bit.  After looking at the websites i’m pretty sure i got off easy.

Shingles itself isn’t contagious.  You can’t catch shingles from someone who has shingles, BUT.. if you haven’t had chickenpox you can get it from someone with shingles (since it’s the same virus)

So enough about that-

Apple released it’s much rumored iPad today.  As much as i used to hate the concept of Apple, i’ve really come full circle now.  I carry my macbook around just as much as i carry my dell laptop.  I’ve found my iPhone extremely useful and productive. It’s just so small.. It’s good size for a phone but when i’m using it to VNC or RDP it’s a little hard.  And watching a movie on a 3 inch screen takes something away from the cinematic experience.  Now with the iPad, all that is a thing of the past.  *JOHN’S PREDICTIONS* I could really see one of these in everyone’s home, especially at the starting price of $499.

This is why i'm fat

I walked into the break room and saw all this food. i resisted.  Nothing good could come from any of that.  I was sitting down and one of the sales guys bring in a box of more donughts and wouldn't take no for an answer.  Away from you you temptress.

and when the lamb open the 7th seal, silence covered the land

i got home, after an extraordinary long day. We are getting rid of two older storage sheds to make room for a new larger one at the station. So... we spent much of the morning throwing stuff out into a roll-away dumpster. Sometime later that afternoon i was throwing away some old computer and decided to chuck on in their as far as i could. it made it about half way in and even shattered the window i'd been triying to break all morning. (that was already thrown in the dumpster) Shortly after that my shoulder was letting me know that it didn't appericate the treatment i had given it. Spent the rest of the afternoon taking care of things i'd been putting off here and then. I got a habbit of leaving stuff in my mail's inbox until it's done or needs to be seen again soon. otherwise it get's filed away. nothing ever get thrown away. as of this moment i only have 1 item in my inbox from today.
So anyway... after a long day i get home, the house is empty or appears to be. i got to turn off the tv's left on, the lights left on.. lift ozzie on my shoulder and sit in the rocking chair. in the quiet, peaceful house. it was so nice to come home to that. the peace probably didn't last 10 minutes at most but it was 10 minutes well spent. i think i'm going to take something for this shoulder and get to bed early. tomorrow we get to clean out the storage units at the self-storage place.

The Brass Chair Barbershop

we're driving around one day and patti pointed out this new babershop close by the house.  I wonder if that was a hint?  The summer is usually my shaggy season.  probably remincinte of my cornerstone days.  something about showing up looking like one of the lost members of the beatles.  So anyway, this morning had to go by melfarts, pick up some stuff for VBS, go by church, install this stuff, come home get changed back to church, do a wedding at 3, then a party at 5, then pratice at 6.. somewhere in between their i thought, i kind of do need a hair cut.  so i stoped by the place.  I haven't been to a babershop in a while.  Something about the old vinal chairs, the smell of warm shaving cream and barb-i-cide.  Some old man named Veno who could tame that mop in 3 minutes flat.. not a single electric razor.  and if he did have one. it was one of those old one that had a metalic relay starting off the entire thing.  SNAP! it would go when turned on.

So i walk in this place totally expecting that.  Something must have changed since the last time i went to a barbershop.  I thought i had walked into a snazzy hotel.  This place had a hostess, who presented me with a menu of haircuts to chose from.  After filling out a card with my "order" i was then offered a complimentry drink from the bar.  "No thanks, just had lunch"  I then go over to the waiting area and looking over the reading material some guy offers me a shoeshine.  "um.. no thanks".  There was only two barber so it was a little wait but didn't seam to long.  The barbers wasn't some old man named vito, but i had an older lady named dora.

All in all.. it was a good haircut.  i think i may actaully go back (more than twice a year)

Shocking Morning

So i'm getting up and ready... combing my hair minding my own business... when all of a sudden, out of the corner of my eye, i saw something so shocking it could shake my existence as we know it.  a white hair.  i know that others have been spotted before, but this is the first time that I actually found one myself.  or maybe it was just the lighting.. hang on...

not quite sure what this means.  it's not like i'm getting old or anything.  now where did i leave my meta-mucial

back to my high school weight

or at least that's my goal.  They say that you gain weight when your married for some reason.  i don't see why.  i'm not any taller now then i was back then.  so i've worked on cutting out the sodas, and tacobell, and mcdonalds.

i'm not sitting around watching tv all the time or anything but i'm not very active unless we're out doing a show or something.  and that hasn't been all that often anyway.  so last night patti and i went and got a bike.  hannah came with and she got one too.  i haven't ridden in a while but they say it's like ridding a horse, you just have to get right back on, wait no.. it's like an elephant.. you never forget.

more wisdom teeth

i'm getting good at this.  Patti took tori to the dentist.  her jaw had been hurting.  I just heard back from Patti, the verdict is her wisdom teeth have to go.  First it was me, then Megan, now tori.  Poor thing.  But it's better that they go when they are young.  Lori just had her's done and it was quite the ordeal because of her age.  The roots were well dug into the bone and took a while to urge them out.  Thank goodness for insurance.

i know the routine now.  first a referral to the oral surgeon.
