A few things to note,

  • country code returns to spain.
  • the email address uses the domain micro-world.com but the web links provided use microworld.com
  • micro-world.com belongs to a company in Torrance, CA where the company in this email is from Spain.
  • the company wants you to pick up the “prize” in Spain or have them deliver it COD (for shipping expenses).  I wonder how much that COD charge would be.
  • The lack of grammar is another good give away (no pun in intended)

Basically, one of those deals where if you never entered a contest in spain, and they want you to pay up front, too good to be true.  sorry.

The bad guys are busy today

Got two suspicious emails today.   Here is the first one

image

The first thing to notice, this wasn't sent directly to me.  The address is close but not me.  So this is some bot who put address in alphabetical list and set it out to groups at a time.

2nd thing, zip files have become notorious for sending virus and malware.

3rdly, I’ve been on fb all morning without any problem logging in so i know my password hasn’t been changed.

But what if I had opened that file.  Well I tested it against several antivirus programs.

Just scanning the file directly with Symantec didn’t find anything.

Opening the zip revealed an executable waiting to deliver it’s payload.

image

Symantec 10 didn’t find any problems with this file with normal scans but Sophos found it as Mal/BredoZP-B

The 2nd one was a little more crafty.

image

1st thing, this was sent directly to me but with an address i use specify for those sites which require you to enter an email address.  I use this one so i can confirm but discard any junk mail they send.

I tested the link to see if it redirected to a suspicious site.  No it actually went to that site with a doc file waiting for me.

I checked the site the file is hosted at and it belongs to:

Registered through: GoDaddy.com, Inc. (http://www.godaddy.com)
Domain Name: MARCUSLAWCENTER.COM
Created on: 16-Oct-09
Expires on: 16-Oct-11
Last Updated on: 25-Jan-10

So i opened the doc file expecting maybe a macro or something.  No macros found, and it passed my initial av scans.

When i opened it i found this..

image

So why not just send me the PDF directly?  Why package it directly into a word document?  So i look at the properties of the “pdf”  AH HA!

image

in side of there is an executable waiting to be ran.

Symantec 10 didn’t find anything wrong with this file but Sophos did detect it as Virus/spyware Rooj/Resdro-C

as a side note, Marcus Law did remove the link and placed an alert on their website.  They have made an effort to thwart off any further infection.  This should be an example however to all admins of websites to ensure the security of your servers, keep up to date with patches and fixes and lock those servers down as much as possible.

Mac's view of Windows

Here at my new job, the ratio of PCs to Mac's is about 50/50.  Today i was showing one of the professors that instead of buying a bulk of usb drives to share data between his staff, they could just all put it on one of our servers.  So i was doing some testing on his mac and when i went to browse to the server the icon looked strangly familar.  Not the typical windows icon i would expect but the icon looks liked the BSoD!

I wasn't sure if this was really what i was seeing until i "google'd" it and sure enough found this site

http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/mac-loves-windows-blue-screen-of-death/

http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/30/mini-how-to-remove-the-windows-bsod-icon-in-leopard-make-os-x-a-little-less-smug/

I guess it's just mac's way of poking fun of such a superior OS or just the best way users identify with the windows os?  Either way.. i got a slight chuckle out of it.

i thought they were for my roof

most bloggers i follow on my rss feed don’t talk about their own health but for me it’s the most exciting thing going on.  remember my wisdom teeth that they barbarically stole from me.  yeah, i got a few weeks worth of stuff to talk about then.  about two weeks ago i noticed this weird rash along my side.  It was red and roundish and about the size of a quarter.  My first thought was that it looked like ring-worm- but i hadn’t been mud wrestling lately.  A few days later i noticed other spots along the same side of my body.  What was strangest is that they were actually painful.  Not like itchy but sore.  For a while i though i had cracked a rib somehow but again, no contact sports lately.  Finally by that Friday i was quite uncomfortable and the spots were spreading.  I gave in and went to see the doctor.  First of all, they schedule me for 9:20.  10 oclock they call my name to weight me and take my temp.  then they send me back to the waiting room.  10 minutes later they put me in a room.  The doctor lady person wasn’t long after that.  i showed her the spots and she took a step back.  “Do they hurt?” yeah.. “is it a stabbing pain? Tingling kind of prickly?” um.. now that i think of it.. yeah it is a stabbing pain.. and it does tingle like a foot fallen asleep.  “Have you ever had chicken pox?” um.. when i was like 6 or 7.

So come to find out.. I have Shingles.  Interesting thing about shingles, it’s the Chicken Pox redux.  When you get the ckicken pox… and it clears up, the virus that causes it, varicella, goes dormant.  Usually when your really old and have a weekend immune system, the virus wakes up again but comes back as shingles.  So i got these huge 1000mg pills and Patti got me some lotion that really helps.  a week later it’s cleared up quite a bit.  After looking at the websites i’m pretty sure i got off easy.

Shingles itself isn’t contagious.  You can’t catch shingles from someone who has shingles, BUT.. if you haven’t had chickenpox you can get it from someone with shingles (since it’s the same virus)

So enough about that-

Apple released it’s much rumored iPad today.  As much as i used to hate the concept of Apple, i’ve really come full circle now.  I carry my macbook around just as much as i carry my dell laptop.  I’ve found my iPhone extremely useful and productive. It’s just so small.. It’s good size for a phone but when i’m using it to VNC or RDP it’s a little hard.  And watching a movie on a 3 inch screen takes something away from the cinematic experience.  Now with the iPad, all that is a thing of the past.  *JOHN’S PREDICTIONS* I could really see one of these in everyone’s home, especially at the starting price of $499.

my new favorite app

The iPhone redbox app is by far my new favorite app.  Last night Patti and i were at HEB and wanted to "redbox" a movie.  So we go to the machine and of course there is a line in front of it with people browsing.  *sigh* so we go inside to shop and while we are shopping i pull out my iPhone, open up the redbox app and start browsing the movies that are loaded into that very machine we were standing in front of.  Found starwars and even though we had both seen it before, it was a good movie and wouldn't mind getting to see it again.  So i clicked on "Reserve" and while patti was in the checkline, i walked back over to the machine, "clicked" the online reservation button, swiped my card and out popped my movie.

As an added bonus, i got an email confirmation of the reservation and a confirmation when the movie was returned this morning.  now i'm just waiting for the chance try it again!

Mackie SR40x8 1997-2009

251412 years with this piece of machinery.  It really wasn't at horrid as i may make it out to be at times.. but it still kept us on our toes.  Signal bleeds, distorted or missing aux sends, mis-grouping, muted intercom... usually a swift bang in the right spot would clear it up.  Last night was the final service with it.  I ran the morning service but Guy ran it's final .  We moved the console out so the youth could be bestowed with it's grace tonight.  I've also removed the compressors and gates as well as the console's PS.  Tonight i'm going to pull the EQ's and processors.  The next day i'm going to move the patch bay to one of the now empty racks.  (have to fill up all this empty space somehow) The new console is more than just a sound board but it incorporates pretty much all the equiptment picutred bellow into one compact 11U system.  The new "board" is smaller than the old one but still impressive enough to show off and listen to the oohhh's from jellous on-lookers.
