So I was minding my own business checking up on status and seeing what everyone one else was doing.  I commented on a few post and even added an app which is rare.

Yes it appears facebook has become my one stop shop for social networks.  I have a linked-in, Google+ and twitter but the end of all of micro-blogging is FB for me.  Granted, there have been a few quirks when it comes to the balance of engaging/sharing and sharing way to much.  The controls are confusing and ambiguous at best.  The security settings should be written with a few preset modes that users can customize.

1) Voyeur – “Let the whole world see, I have nothing to hide”

2) Only if I know you – “If your my friend, then you can see”

3) Double Life – “If I know you and your in the right group” other wise you see the sanitized version

4) Paranoid – “what am i even doing here, i don’t want to share anything”

oh well.. maybe some day. So I was on my phone and started up my fb app and it asked me to login.  Strange.. but ok?  That’s when I got my first indication something was wrong…

mobile denied

So I got to my computer and tried to login there..

And I come to find that my account has been disabled.  Not limited or warned but flat out shut down.  My identity gone, Timeline information going back to 1985.  33 albums, 24 videos, poof.  My wife was suddenly single again, all of the apps I’ve developed were removed, the 5 pages I run were gone, some with a reach as high as 155,198.

So I clicked the link indicated and it took me to a page talking about community guidelines and using real identities instead of false ones.  So… FB decided that I was impersonating the real “John Munoz” ?  There was a form to fill out online asking for a copy of my drivers license.  So I sent that up (after redacting information they didn’t need) and then that off.  This was Sunday evening.  All day Monday was quiet.  My wife recently showed me “Where’s My Water” so that kept me somewhat occupied.  Finaly at 9:45 last night I got a message back

Hi John,

Thanks for verifying your identity.

After investigating this further, it looks like we suspended your account by mistake. I’m so sorry for the inconvenience. You should now be able to log in. If you have any issues getting back into your account, please let me know.

User Operations

So that’s that.. I’m back now.. a little wiser for the weary.  The ironic thing was Patti was just asking me, if FB ever died, what would happen to all of our data.  Hidden away inside your fb is an option to download a copy of all your fb data.  Visit this link and chose “Download a copy of your facebook data” at the bottom of the page.”  There are lots of 3rd party programs that you can use this data with.. but more on that later.  I’m just glad to be back.

Viacom vs DirecTV, AMC vs DISH, etc etc

Where does it all end

job-fails-in-this-corner-we-have-two-spoiled-siblingsViacom (Comedy Central, MTV, Nicelodeon, etc) and DirectTV are fighting over which Viacom channels DirectTV will carry.  DirectTV blocked all of Viacom’s channels and in response Viacome removed the Dailiy Show and free episodes of Jersey Shore off the internet, which they were supposing DirectTV’s customers were using to watch the show as an alternative.

What’s going on is the networks, like Viacom, charge the providers, Direct TV, Dish, Time Warner, etc. to air their programs.  They in turn use their subscriber charges to pay those charges.  Never mind all the commercials the network and local provider throw in there.

DISH has blocked AMC channels for the same reason.  AMC responded by streaming Breaking Bad online for free.  Some companies have customers thoughts in mind.. or at least want to appear that way.

at least make it seam legit..

Here’s another email that made it in..

If someone actually falls for this one.. I’m sorry; the lesson to learn here is you just lost your internet privileges.

$1542.77 Bill from Verizon

So recently I DID open a Verizon wireless account, didn’t think I was signed up for auto-payment but I could have.. but I’m sure I couldn’t have racked up $1500 in charges.. could I?  So the first thing this email is trying to do is get you to say “What?!”  and hastily click on the link to see what the deal is.

An unsuspecting user would click on the link and get taken to a few redirect that eventually land on a blank page.  Unknowing their browser just became a victim of Troj JSRedir-GZ

Again, don’t click links in emails.  Ever.

This afternoon I sat in attendance along with hundreds of others watching the McHi class of 2012 move their tassels across their caps.  Hannah walked across that stage and accepted her diploma.  I can’t put into words how proud I am of her and her accomplishments.  She has grown up to be such an amazing young woman. She’s taken an interest in music and technology. She’s taken a strong interest in Sign Language and become one of if not the best in her class. She developed a desire to help the deaf community and wants to use her talents to help them.

In the 15 years I’ve had the pleasure of knowing her, I’ve been able to be a part of her groaning up from a cute kids to an amazing young woman. She is truly everything i could have asked for in a child of my own. This coming from a guy who never wanted kids. I couldn’t be any prouder of her. I know we can expect great things from you in this next endeavor of your life. I’m so excited to find out what’s next in your life. You’ve already made us all so proud.

I remember times when I got to take you to school, and get lost taking you to school. I remember having lunch at your elementary with you and your mother. I remember all the years of joining you to “meet the teacher night” In these past years you’ve probably taught me more about being a step-parent than I could have ever bestowed on you. For that I thank you. Thank you for making me a better person. Thank you for blessing me with the privilege of getting to be a part of such a wonderful person’s life. Now as you prepare to move on to your next challenge. I leave you with one of my favorite lines from Robert Frost.

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of the easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Amazon Email ID PP468

Well.. first off they address me “Amazon Member”.  Amazon knows my name.  They would use it.

2ndly in the world of phishing scams.. NEVER click links in emails.  Even if they are from someone you know. Instead visit the website directly.

3rd.  This message was sent to an email address I created to use in Craiglist exclusively.  It’s not the address I use exclusively for amazon.

Upon visiting the website..

It looks like they are just trying harvest username’s and passwords.  But still that’s usually enough to cause havoc.

It’s a decent screen scrape of the real amazon website.. but the link pointing to is a good give away.

Today’s Scam #3

This Facebook scam is fairly common.  It relys on some unsuspecting person to find an article that they feel will lure people into clicking on it.  By clicking on it they are usually taking to an app page asking for permission to access your personal information.  Then to add shame to the whole process.. it post on that users wall what they just did.. hoping more will fall for it.

Todays Scam #2

This one comes from two parts.. one an unsuspecting user click on an unknown and unexpected link and surprisingly their computer is now infected with a bug that sends it self to all the users in that persons address book.  And the cycle continues.  This “chain virus” could be stopped if people were just careful about what links they chose to open.
